Motivation

There are so many motivational speakers out there teaching everything from success building to thriving as an entrepreneur, especially in these uncertain times.

How do you keep your team motivated? Or if you are a consultant or a small business – how do you stay motivated in your day to day? Whether you work for a big company or if you are your own boss, everyone has been affected by covid and these challenging times. Now that we are all starting to venture out of our own four walls, it’s a great time to reassess how we move through life and how we stay motivated throughout our day.

Tony Robbins, one of the greatest motivational speakers of our time and business coach, author, speaker and philanthropist has a lot to say about this topic. He offers some life hacks that you might find helpful.

“Everyday, stand guard at the door of your mind,” said his teacher Jim Rohn (American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker). Tony has a great deal to say about what this means to him. What this statement means to me is that we have to be careful of allowing outside forces affect our thoughts. It is so easy to get caught up and sucked into ideology that is not in alignment with our heart or our truth.

Let’s take the media/news for instance. It’s easy to just sit back and listen to the news and the negativity that is present. Knowing what is happening is obviously important, however feeding your mind constantly with opinions, posturing and juxtaposing can get overwhelming and exhausting – not to mention what it can do to our nervous system.

So this statement of guarding the door to the mind is an important reminder that where we place our focus will become our thoughts. If we are feeding ourselves negativity then that is what we surround ourselves with and it’s difficult, in that state to be in a place of receptivity and openness to creativity, helping ideas to flow – let alone productivity.

The next thing Tony talks about in order to help you stay motivated are to focus on a daily practice and continued immersion. He’s always talking about how progress equals happiness.

When I was a VP for a Hollywood PR firm in Beverly Hills many years ago, we’d bring our team together at 9:30am every day and have a pow wow. It really helped to share our checklist of everything that we accomplished the day before and what were the priorities for the current day. If anyone needed some support on how to position a client we would share ideas. It was like an anchor everyday knowing we would have our tea or coffee and go through the lists. It also helped in a busy firm to be a little social and connect with the staff. It was a great time to rev our engines up and feel motivated to start our work for the day.

Another great piece of advice from Tony is to feed your mind and your body. He suggests reading something that you are pursuing will help feed your mind. Working out, moving your body or something active 5 times per week will help strengthen your body.

He talks about getting a role model. When I was pursuing my dream as a Hollywood publicist, I got a mentor. He was a seasoned publicist in Hollywood who happened to be 83 years old and it was an incredible year of growth for me during that time. I highly recommend it!

Lastly, over deliver and under promise. If you can do this, it will help motivate you in the overall because people appreciate when you give them something more than was promised. When you do this, you build trust as well with others.

Here are some ideas to help get you motivated in your daily routine:

  1. Be mindful of the momentum that you are sourcing. If your flow/creativity is all dried up then perhaps it is time to adjust your sails. Get clear on your thoughts and how open you really are.

  2. Create a daily practiced that is consistent everyday. Whether it’s pulling your team together for a morning or afternoon meeting or going through the trade journals to stay connected to what is going on in your industry – creating something daily will help develop cohesiveness within your structure.

  3. Read or listen to a podcast or an audio book at least 30 minutes a day.

  4. Move your body/exercise at least 5 times per week

  5. Find a mentor and talk with them at least 1 time per week

  6. Plan and take action. The most successful people are those who create a plan and then navigate that with action. Nothing can get created without taking steps towards that goal.
