Stay Productive This Summer

It can be difficult to stay productive at any time of the year. Summer often exacerbates this for people. The weather is warm out, the sun is shining, and you are in an office working.

Simply put, the work doesn’t stop, so how do you stay productive during this time and continue accomplishing what needs to be done?

Different strategies work for different people to continue moving forward. I have tried many different strategies and I have found some particularly useful.

For starters, I like to remind myself each week why I am working so hard. I think about my goals, my family, and the future. Starting each week with my why in the back of my mind motivates me for the week. I have found going over this either physically with a list or in my head helps to jump-start my Monday and Tuesday when I don’t feel completely focused.

While I am at work and completing tasks, I have found making a continuous effort to unplug from social media to be extremely helpful. Not only does it reduce distraction in general, but during the summertime, I find that looking at images of others having fun out of the office can reduce my productivity when I am in the office. People typically only post the exciting activities, and at times comparing it to yourself when you’re doing something more mundane, can be defeating.

One tip I use to be productive regardless of the season is to take care of my body and mind. When you’re not in a healthy state of mind or your body is exhausted, it is much harder to be productive. You need to focus on health and even take a step back if and when necessary.

My next tip is to break big tasks down into small manageable pieces. When I am faced with a big task I often become overwhelmed and shut down. I work better when I have a few small tasks instead. It is easier for me to wrap my head around and truly stay productive.

One thing that I find incredibly helpful is to take breaks when needed. Especially when I get frustrated or confused with a task, I have found over time that taking a break and coming back to the task often produces better results than continuing not at your best.

My last tip is to focus on one thing at a time. This is something I have struggled with in the past. At times I still find myself thinking about and working on 100 things all at once. I have realized that speaking for the long term is not the most effective way to do things. Rather, it is more productive to give all of your efforts to one task at a time.

To sum up, I have 6 tips to help you stay productive this summer.

  1. Remind yourself why you do it

  2. Unplug from social media

  3. Take care of your mind and body

  4. Break big tasks down

  5. Take breaks

  6. Focus on one thing at a time
